Silence and action
tl;dr: don’t just talk - outwork, have fun, and do things with love
"Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary, use words." Actions always speak louder than words.
A related lesson: embrace silence, or at least speak last. Leading by example is stronger than talking. Often, too much talk is just self-convincing or pretending.
That's just context. What I really want to write about today is outworking.
When your peers or leaders aren't doing a good job, you have three choices:
- Leave - find another place to work.
- Argue - try to convince people.
- Outwork - stop talking and just do more.
I usually choose the third. Complaining is just a hidden fourth option: doing nothing. And doing nothing when you're unhappy isn't valid.
But even outworking doesn't always fix the problem. You may still dislike being in a place where others don't share your standards or ethics.
Today I heard Murilo Gun say about presenting: "It's not about saying the right words, it's about having fun. Otherwise this work isn't sustainable."
I believe that too. Life should be enjoyed. Work, any work, can be fun.
Every day I walk twice with Mimosa. On those walks I see people doing the same job - like cleaning the walkway. Some are happy, some are sad.
If you do anything with love, it becomes sacred. You don't need to love every task, but you should enjoy the game. The difference is never the job - it's the way you do it.
And the way you do something says more about who you are and how you feel about your life in general than about the job. If you are good, you only have good to give.
That's it for today, remember: ice cream and helping people. Enjoy life.
